What is Body Composition?
Why isn't BMI enough for advanced use?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a common method used to assess an individual's health, by comparing their weight with their health. The primary limitation of BMI is that it only utilizes full body weight, and there's no way to tell if weight changes are due to fat or muscle. Two people with the same BMI will be categorized as having the same health risk, even if one person if mostly fat, and the other is mostly muscle!
Why is Body Composition important?
Traditionally, many fitness or dietary goals have been focused on gaining or losing weight - understandably, if all you have is a weight scales. With Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) making body composition accessible, safe, and affordable compared to other analysis methods, you can regularly track the key components of your body, providing a valuable snapshot into your health status!

Introduction to BIA
Using electrodes, a BIA device sends a safe alternating current through the body to measure bioelectrical “impedance”, which can be used to calculate body composition results such as body water, fat, muscle, and more.
Impedance (Z) is the measure of the drop in voltage created when body tissue resists the measurement current.
Impedance is formed using a combination of two components: ohmic resistance (known as "Resistance" or "R") of the electrolyte-containing extra- and intracellular fluid, and the capacitive resistance (known as "Reactance" or "Xc") produced by cell membranes.

What can we learn from Resistance?
In general terms, water acts as a conductor, so more body water correlates with decreased Resistance. According to this principle, because muscle contains a significant amount of wa ter, subjects with increased muscle mass will have less Resistance. Conversely, because fat acts as an insulator, more fat correlates with increased Resistance.
What can we learn from Reactance?
When the electric current passes through body cells, cell membranes can store the charge and act like capacitors, creating capacitive resistance. Thus, Reactance is used to determine the cell's ability to store energy, indirectly reflecting cellular integrity and strength.
Using clinically validated algorithms, BIA devices can calculate the amount of fat, muscle, body water, and other parameters using Impedance, Reactance, Resistance, and other variables such as height, gender, age, and weight.
The applicability of a BIA device fundamentally depends on the applied mathematical equations and algorithms used to calculate body composition. Development and validation of these equations is a technically complex process, and the validity of the equations ultimately determines the accuracy of the BIA device!
